About 1 in 100 people have epilepsy. When most people think of epilepsy or seizures, they think of someone falling to the ground and shaking. That is one of many types of seizures. Some seizures can be mistaken for day dreaming, intoxication, or belligerence. Knowing how to identify different types of seizures and how to respond appropriately will help de-escalate a situation.

Learning Objectives:

When you have completed this course you will be able to:

  • Recall the main types of seizures and their characteristics
  • Identify signs that an individual may be having a seizure
  • Describe response procedures that can aid in maintaining your own safety and the safety of others while protecting the rights of the individual having a seizure
  • Determine the proper course of action and assess the need for medical care for an individual experiencing a seizure
