Conducting a criminal investigation takes time, expertise, knowledge, and strategy. Even a simple criminal investigation can be complex and require the assistance of specialized units, the completion of notes, reports, forms, and documents. However, the success of any investigation depends upon an officer’s full dedication to every step of the investigation process. Therefore, it is important to know that your responsibilities to an investigation do not end with the arrest but continue through the court process and include the Show Cause Package, managing witnesses, and your court testimony.

In this module, we will explore how to properly prepare a Show Cause Package, why this responsibility is so important, and examine the role it plays in your investigation.

This course is part of the Alberta Investigative Skills Education Program (ISEP) level 200.

When you have completed this course you will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose of a show cause hearing
  • Explain the importance of properly preparing for a show cause hearing
  • List the grounds for remanding someone in custody prior to a trial
  • Explain the purpose of release conditions
