Marking a new tradition for the Canadian Police Knowledge Network’s (CPKN) annual Stanhope Conference, this year saw the introduction of the CPKN Compass Award.
The CPKN Compass Award recognizes an individual, training unit, police service or any configuration there within who truly embody the values and spirit of CPKN. This distinction is awarded to those who demonstrate collaboration, integrity, and a strong commitment to advancing learning and knowledge-sharing within the policing community, as well as supporting CPKN’s broader mission.
“As I travelled across Canada this past year, I encountered numerous individuals, training units, and services making significant contributions to the Network and embodying the principles CPKN stands for,” said Sonia Poulin, President, CPKN. “It was important to create a new tradition to recognize these contributors, as the success of the Network relies on collective effort. This award reflects not only what we do, but who we are.”
What makes this award truly unique is nominations for the award are submitted by CPKN staff and the recipient is selected through a vote by all staff members.
Following several valuable nominations for individuals and units across the country, the inaugural CPKN Compass Award was presented to Sean O’Brien, Sergeant, Toronto Police Service.
O’Brien has been an active participant in CPKN since 2012. He has served on the National Advisory Committee (NAC), the NAC’s Innovation Subcommittee, participated in and hosted in-person User Groups, engaged regularly in the CPKN Network Webinar Series and Focus Groups, presented at the annual Stanhope Conference, and frequently collaborates with colleagues nationwide to support professional development and knowledge sharing.
He has facilitated partnerships, recommended collaborative initiatives, and consistently contributed suggestions for improvements to CPKN’s learning management system, user experience, and the adoption of innovative technologies.
“Sean is not only highly valued but also deeply respected by our CPKN staff,” noted Krystine Richards, Vice President of Operations, CPKN. “He is a trusted advisor and is highly regarded both within our organization and throughout Canada. Sean truly represents the core values of CPKN.”
The introduction of the CPKN Compass Award marks an exciting new chapter in recognizing dedication and excellence across Canada’s policing and public safety communities. As CPKN continues to celebrate those who lead by example, the award serves as an inspiration for others to contribute, collaborate, and uphold the values that strengthen the Network.
