Course Overview

Welcome to Foundations of Islam and Addressing Islamophobia.

Hate crimes have long been a priority for policing across Canada, and reported incidents continue to rise year over year. Police services across the nation are committed to providing ongoing, timely training that reflects the changing needs of their members and their communities.

To address the rise in reported hate crimes and hate incidents, the Toronto Police Service has developed the e-learning course Foundations of Islam and Addressing Islamophobia: Community Trust and Allyship in Policing.

This course is available to all police services across Canada and provides policing members with foundational knowledge of the practice of Islam, as well as important information on the impacts and key investigative principles of hate crime offences.

When you have completed this course you will be able to:

  • Gain a foundational understanding of Islam, including the religious and cultural nuances
  • Define Islamophobia and recognize its impact on communities
  • Examine the role of media in shaping perceptions and narrative
  • Identify modern-day expressions of Islamophobia and impact on policing practice
