The Canadian Police Knowledge Network (CPKN) has taken a progressive step forward to expand its research in policing and public safety with a new research arm.
Developed by CPKN’s Department of Innovation, the research arm aims to bridge the gaps between academic, not-for-profit, and government initiatives by using CPKN’s expansive network of police and public safety partners—and its expertise in eLearning—to uncover new avenues for advancement in training and professional development.
The initiative joins other pioneering projects led by the department, including advancements in technology such as extended reality (XR), improvements to courseware, and continual improvements in the Learning Management System (LMS). By supporting evidence-based decision-making, the research arm will further enhance the learning solutions offered by CPKN and its subsidiary, the Professional Security Knowledge Network (PSKN).
“Research is essential to any organization seeking to make strategic decisions,” says Chantelle Ivanski, Director, Department of Innovation, CPKN. “By investing in this research arm, CPKN can confidently inform and reinforce our policies, services, programs, and products.”
The research arm’s key functions will focus on operational research, knowledge development, and partnership development. Through these areas, current and new courses will be evaluated and improved, help CPKN meet police and public safety training requirements, and expand its collaboration base—ultimately improving its response to the evolving needs of the policing community.
“We often say that we work as an extension of the policing community, and this research arm provides us with a new way to serve our partners," says Ivanski. “Many organizations see the importance of data informed decisions but don’t have the capacity to do the research, this is where we can help.”
Through its research arm, CPKN can become a key partner for services that want to explore advancements in public safety and transform the future of police professional development through evidence-based approaches and collaborative innovation. CPKN is not only enhancing its own offerings but also helping shape a more responsive, informed, and future-ready public safety community.
