WHMIS – Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is Canada’s national standard for communicating information about hazardous workplace products. It is implemented through complementary federal, provincial, and territorial laws. WHMIS training is critical to ensuring that employers and workers receive consistent and comprehensive health and safety information about the hazardous products they may be exposed to at work.

Successful participants will receive a course completion certificate. To complete the course, learners must achieve at least 80% on the final quiz.

This course is provided by Public Services Health & Safety Association (PSHSA), an organization funded by the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development. As part of the province’s occupational health and safety system, we are dedicated to preventing accidents, injuries, and illnesses and looking ahead to anticipate the health, safety, and wellbeing needs of workers.

When you have completed this course you will be able to:

• Describe what WHMIS is and why it is important to workers
• Describe what the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) is and how it affects WHMIS
• Describe how hazardous products affect the body
• Identify the WHMIS hazard classification and pictograms
• Identify the types of information covered on supplier and workplace labels
• Describe the purpose, content, and function of a Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
• Describe the hazard controls for WHMIS regulated products
• Describe legal rights and duties under WHMIS
• Apply the knowledge acquired in this course to their workplace
