Course Overview
The Facial Recognition Investigative Certification Course (FRIC) is a comprehensive online training program designed for law enforcement officers, investigators, analysts, prosecutors, and other criminal justice professionals who utilize or receive facial recognition leads during investigations. As facial recognition technology becomes increasingly prevalent, understanding its capabilities, limitations, legal considerations, and proper investigative application is essential to ensuring accurate, ethical, and defensible outcomes.
This self-paced course provides students with a practical understanding of facial recognition technology, including terminology, workflows, morphological comparison concepts, cognitive bias mitigation, and the distinction between an investigative lead and probable cause. Students will examine common investigative errors, wrongful arrest case studies, best practices, policy considerations, and accepted standards for human review and corroboration.
Instruction incorporates current guidance, scientific principles, and real-world investigative examples to equip students with the knowledge necessary to responsibly evaluate facial recognition results and integrate them into lawful, evidence-based investigations.
Topics Include: History and evolution of facial recognition technology; terminology and key concepts, understanding investigative workflows; the role of the human reviewer and morphological analysis; cognitive bias and error mitigation strategies; legal and ethical considerations; policy development overview; wrongful arrest case studies and lessons learned; corroboration requirements and investigative best practices; and emerging trends and future considerations.
Upon successful completion, students receive a Certificate of Completion and will possess the foundational knowledge necessary to safely and effectively incorporate facial recognition leads into the investigative process.
