Your LMS is Getting an Update – Discover What’s New
By Natalie Fournier
As part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing the learning experience for police and public safety professionals, CPKN will be performing its annual Learning Management System (LMS) upgrade on Monday, August 31. This update introduces several new features and usability improvements designed to make learning, administration, and content management easier and more effective.
The ILIAS 9 upgrade includes a number of enhancements, including:
What’s New
- Learn with Flashcards – Allows learners to review terms using a spaced repetition approach, making it easier to memorize definitions and reinforce key concepts.
- Bulk Import Glossary Terms – Users can now import glossary terms directly from spreadsheets, significantly reducing the time required to create and maintain learning resources.
- Improved Exercise Workflow – A clearer layout and improved organization make it easier to track current, upcoming, and completed assignments.
- Enhanced Test Results – Learners and instructors can now view all relevant information on a single page, with visual indicators for correct, partially correct, and incorrect answers. New filtering and sorting options also make assessment review faster and more intuitive.
- Redesigned Metadata Editor – The Learning Object Metadata (LOM) editor has been modernized with a more intuitive interface, making it faster and easier to manage metadata for courses and learning materials.
- Improved User Experience – Numerous usability and interface enhancements will be introduced, streamlining common workflows and providing a more modern, consistent experience for learners, instructors, and administrators.
- More Flexible Student Dashboard – The Student Dashboard now has standard blocks for Learning Sequences, Study Programmes, and Recommended Content. Portal Administrators can enable or disable individual dashboard blocks, customize display order, and define how information is presented by default.
- Rich Text System Notifications – System notifications can now be created using a full WYSIWYG editor, allowing Portal Administrators to create richer, better-formatted announcements and messages.
- File Preview Images for Tiles – Will make content more visually engaging and helping learners identify resources more quickly.
- Drag-and-Drop Page Editing – Allows authors to quickly rearrange content elements without rebuilding pages.
- External Certificates and Learning Evidence – CPKN now supports the integration of external certificates and learning outcomes from other systems, making it easier to recognize learning completed outside the platform and incorporate it into a learner’s overall training record.
- Performance and Security Enhancements – Numerous performance optimizations, stability improvements, and security updates have been incorporated throughout the platform, delivering a faster, more reliable, and more secure learning experience.
To support the upgrade, CPKN will implement a change freeze from August 1 to August 31. During this period, no new portals or enhancement requests will be implemented. Organizations with upcoming requests are encouraged to submit them before August 1. Urgent business requirements will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This freeze is not expected to impact end users.
These enhancements reflect CPKN’s continued investment in providing a modern, effective, and secure learning environment. Following the upgrade, we encourage you to share your feedback to help shape future improvements. If you have any questions, please contact us at support@cpkn.ca.
