What started as one CPKN course a day became a remarkable learning journey for Jean-Phillippe Chiasson.

On September 20, 2025, the Highway Safety Enforcement Officer (HSE) with the Inspection and Enforcement New Brunswick (IENB) division at the Department of Justice and Public Safety (JPS), committed to completing one Canadian Police Knowledge Network (CPKN) course every day, regardless of length.
“While I was transitioning from Corrections to HSE, I found myself waiting for surgery after an on-duty injury,” explained Chiasson. “I was entering a new career, still in my probationary period, and I wanted to be as prepared as possible. Rather than focusing on what I couldn’t do, I focused on what I could do. CPKN gave me a way to keep learning, stay engaged, and prepare myself for the next stage of my career.”
His journey with CPKN started with four mandatory courses required for the HSE training process.
After those were completed, he started at the top of the course catalogue list and worked his way through alphabetically, ensuring he didn’t miss a course. By the time he was fully recovered from surgery, and ready to return to work, he had completed approximately 50 CPKN courses.
“At that point, completing a CPKN course had become part of my daily routine, so I decided to continue,” said Chiasson. “I found the courses educational and each course offered something valuable.”
As of June 2026, Chiasson has completed 141 courses and continues to monitor the CPKN website monthly, with the goal of completing any new courses that become available.
Along with the personal pride of achieving his goal, Chiasson says his commitment to continuous learning has received positive praise from his colleagues, supervisors, and leadership within IENB.
Following the completion of all the available CPKN courses, Chiasson has been offered new training and instructing opportunities within IENB. He also accepted an offer to become a JPS Workplace Investigator, an opportunity he believes was made possible from his dedication to completing all CPKN’s courses.
“This journey is a perfect example of how the biggest goals can be achieved when you break them down into smaller ones,” said Chiasson. “By focusing on one course a day, I was able to turn a massive goal into a series of small accomplishments, and before I knew it, I had achieved something that once felt far out of reach.”
