Major Events Security

This course was originally developed by the RCMP and has been made available to a national police audience via CPKN.
Providing security at major events can generate significant challenges for police. Whether it is an international sporting competition or a meeting of world leaders, police officers must be able to recognize, minimize, and respond to potential threats to ensure the safety and security of participants and the public.
Developed by the RCMP, Major Events Security will develop awareness of situations or experiences that may be encountered while working in a security role at a major event. It will familiarize learners with the unique roles officers may be expected to perform during such events and will inform on how to respond to many operational situations.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course you will be able to:
- Summarize the duties of a uniform officer at a major event;
- Apply the Code of Conduct to policing a major event;
- Identify and explain the various situations an officer may encounter during a major event;
- Describe appropriate responses to major event occurrences;
- Recognize the command structure for protocols and reporting during a major event; and
- Describe the recommended strategies for managing media issues at a major event.
Target Audience
This course is designed for sworn police officers as well as any civilian or public service employees who are involved in major event security.
