Firearms Identification for Public Agents (v.2.0)

Effective November 17, 2011, a new version of Firearms Identification for Public Agents is now available.

Version 2.0 significantly expands on original course content to include twelve types of firearms, eleven actions, muzzle loading and breech loading firearms, antiques, military firearms, firearm assemblies and components, metallic cartridges, and more.

Whether conducting CPIC inquiries, firearms traces, affidavit submissions, warrant executions, evidence control or reporting firearms for the Public Agents Regulations or in ensuring compliance with the Firearms Act, the ability to identify firearms to the Canadian standard simplifies procedures, improves efficiency, and increases capacity to communicate about firearms.

Firearms Identification for Public Agents (v 2.0) is designed to instruct learners on the correct procedures and protocols to identify and classify firearms to the Canadian standard. This course focuses on developing competences around the contributing characteristics of Make, Type, Manufacturer, Action, Class, Calibre and Barrel Length. Learners will learn to apply the Canadian identification standard, and derive a positive identification using the internationally recognized Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s Firearms Reference Table.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Define firearm, differentiate between muzzle loading and breech loading firearms.
  • Identify the 12 firearm types
  • Identify the major assemblies of firearms
  • Identify the eleven actions recognized in Canada
  • Identify firearm sub-assemblies and components.
  • Identify firearm markings
  • Identify metallic cartridges, data stamps and head stamps.
  • Identify different muzzle loading ignition systems
  • Describe firearm identification characteristics
  • Describe and identify antique firearms
  • Define the legal classification of firearms in Canada
  • Identify common military rifles
  • Understand SOR/98-209 Storage, Display, Transportation and Handling of Firearms by Individuals Regulations
  • Utilize the Firearms Reference Table computer database tool to successfully identify a firearm.

This course is to provide a detailed guide to identifying firearms and using the Firearms Reference Table.

AFTER COMPLETING THIS COURSE...

Public Agents reporting firearms inventories in support of the Public Agency Regulations can gain access to the Firearms Reference Table through the Public Agency portal of the Canada Firearms Program website located at www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf beginning October 31st, 2008.

Police officers and other public agents wishing to secure a CD version of the Firearms Reference Table may request a copy through the Firearms Reference Table Section at: frt-traf@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
