Domestic Violence Investigations

Every domestic violence incident is unique, presenting its own set of challenges and potential risks for both the responding officer and the victim(s). Understanding domestic abuse, the attitudes and beliefs that allow it to be perpetuated and the risks to all involved is crucial for safe and effective case investigation and management.
Domestic Violence Investigations provides members of the law enforcement community and outside partner agencies with an interactive program covering the unique elements and issues related to domestic violence for the purpose of enhancing any police officer's ability to successfully investigate domestic violence incidents.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course you will be able to:
- Recognize the dynamics of domestic violence
- Apply appropriate investigative steps to a domestic violence investigation
- Identify common characteristics of abusers and victims
- Recognize the impact of domestic violence on children
- List the investigative steps of a criminal harassment and domestic violence incident
- Identify factors to be used in interviewing individuals involved in a domestic violence incident and factors used to assist in determining the dominant aggressor
- Recognize signs and symptoms of strangulation and other types of injuries
- Identify factors that place a victim or an abuser at risk for escalated violence
- Recognize steps to assist a victim of domestic violence or criminal harassment in safety planning
