Gang Dynamics
Urban Gang Dynamics While organized, street gangs have a unique structure that differs from traditional organized crime such as biker gangs and drug cartels. Street gangs often represent some of the most significant and dangerous problems in our society and are involved in a variety of criminal activities including drug trafficking, fraud, assaultive behavior, and weapons. Since front-line officers often have the most contact with gang members and their accomplices, it is imperative to have a thorough understanding of the culture, organization, and activities of street gangs to ensure effective policing.

The Urban Gang Dynamics course focuses on the key issues to understanding and investigating street gang related crimes. It is designed to instruct officers on information and techniques relevant to investigations of a single gang member or gang, or a multi-jurisdictional criminal organization. In addition to the dynamics of a gang and their impact on communities, this course covers:

  • recruitment strategies
  • laws concerning gangs
  • relevant case law
  • disclosure and liability issues
  • partnering with law enforcement and other organizations to document and share information

Furthermore, given the potentially dangerous situations that police officers may encounter when investigating gang activities, a significant portion of this course is dedicated to officer safety issues.

Participants that successfully complete this course will be better prepared to identify street gang related activity, communicate information to specialized police investigators, and increase their safety in interactions with street gang members.
