Notice: This course is adapted from the Ontario Police College's Advanced Patrol Training Course. As such, some portions of this course are specific to Ontario jurisdictions. Interested participants from outside of Ontario are encouraged to contact CPKN for further information.
The Ontario Police College and the Canadian Police Knowledge Network have adapted the Advanced Patrol Training Course (APT) program into a two-part blended learning course. Officers seeking APT certification can now complete Part I via CPKN and Part II in a condensed police service delivered classroom session.
Designed as a refresher-training course for police officers engaged in general patrol duties, Part I of APT includes 7 modules (listed below) covering a variety of topics specific to patrol duty, legal updates, and current patrol issues. Using case scenarios and experiential exercises, the modules contain basic concepts and foundation material relating to officer authorities in these areas.
To complete the OPC course, learners must complete all 7 modules. Services who conduct their own APT course may opt to build a customized course by selecting individual modules. Please click on any module title below to view the associated Course Training Standard (CTS).

Part I of the APT program delivers theory-based information, case scenarios, and experiential exercises in an online learning environment. Part II, which may be customized to address regional issues, involves a condensed classroom session in which material explored in Part I is reinforced through standard adult education methodologies.
For more information about this blended learning program, please view the APT Blended Learning Guide. The material covered in APT (Part I & II) is basic to front line police officers. However, the updates and current issues may encompass material that officers have not yet experienced.
APT is offered only to sworn peace officers and is designed for front line police officers with three or more years of service.
Part I (online component) must be completed prior to taking Part II (classroom component).
Participants who successfully complete Part I (online) and Part II from an OPC-certified trainer will be issued an OPC certificate for “Advanced Patrol Training Course”. Otherwise, certification must be issued by the Part II delivery agency/service on completion of the program.
